Retrograde

A planet that, seen from Earth, appears to move backwards against the stars for a while. Nothing reverses in space. The apparent step back comes from Earth and the planet overtaking each other on their orbits, the way a slower car seems to drift back when you overtake it.

Astrology reads a retrograde as a time for re-doing rather than doing: re-reading, re-checking, re-connecting. The planet says which part of life it touches.

Today: Mercury (Scorpio), Venus (Libra), Saturn (Aries), Uranus (Gemini), Neptune (Aries).

Direct

The usual forward motion of a planet, and also the moment a retrograde ends and the planet turns to move forward again.

The turn is read as a release: what was being revisited can move on.

Today: Mercury stations direct in Scorpio .

Station

The moment a planet's apparent movement through the zodiac changes direction, at the start and at the end of every retrograde. Astrologers often give the planet's themes extra weight around a station.

Around that moment the planet may appear nearly still for hours or days, so the time shown here is approximate.

Today: Nothing of this kind today.

Ingress

A planet entering a new sign. The Moon usually changes sign every two or three days, the Sun about once a month. A slower planet can spend years in one sign, and a retrograde can carry it back across a boundary.

An ingress changes the tone of what the planet brings: astrologers read the same planet differently in a new sign.

Today: Nothing of this kind today.

Void of course

The period after the Moon's last exact major aspect to the Sun or a planet, before it enters the next sign. The major aspects are the angles of 0, 60, 90, 120 and 180 degrees around the zodiac. Traditionally a time when little that is begun comes to much, and a good one for finishing, resting and routine.

It can last minutes, many hours or occasionally more than a day. The sky page shows today's window.

Today: Nothing of this kind today.

Conjunction

Two bodies at or near the same point around the zodiac. An aspect compares positions around that circle, not what the eye sees. Astrology reads it as a blending of their themes: the pair acts as one, depending on which bodies they are.

The strongest of the aspects. It need not show as a close pair in the visible sky.

Today: Mars conjunction Jupiter (applying).

Trine

Two planets 120 degrees apart, a third of the circle. Astrologers associate trines with ease and cooperation: a pattern that may show where effort meets less resistance.

Its risk is comfort: what comes easily can be left undone.

Today: Uranus trine Pluto (applying).

Square

Two planets 90 degrees apart, a quarter of the circle. Astrologers associate squares with tension between competing needs.

They are often read as a prompt to work through a disagreement or to change an approach.

Today: Moon square Pluto , Sun square Pluto .

Sextile

Two planets 60 degrees apart, a sixth of the circle. A mild, helpful aspect: an opening that rewards a small effort. Written ✶.

Lighter than a trine: it offers rather than gives.

Today: Uranus sextile Neptune (applying).

House

One of the twelve areas of life a chart is divided into: money, conversation, home and family, work, partnership, and so on. Where a planet stands says which area it touches.

Stellonia counts twelve areas from your Sun sign, one zodiac sign to each area, and names them rather than numbering them. The Moon moves through all twelve in a month, which is why its area changes every two or three days.

Ruler

The planet that governs a sign: Mars for Aries, Venus for Taurus and Libra, and so on through the twelve. A sign's ruler stands for the sign wherever it is in the sky.

Whatever the ruler does today, in its sign, its aspects or a station, is read as news for the sign it rules.

Today: Sun, the ruler of Leo: Scorpio 3°.Mars, the ruler of Aries: Leo 15°.Venus, the ruler of Taurus: Libra 29° (retrograde).Mercury, the ruler of Gemini: Scorpio 20° (retrograde).Moon, the ruler of Cancer: Taurus 7°.Sun, the ruler of Leo: Scorpio 3°.Mercury, the ruler of Virgo: Scorpio 20° (retrograde).Venus, the ruler of Libra: Libra 29° (retrograde).Pluto, the ruler of Scorpio: Aquarius 3°.Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius: Leo 23°.Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn: Aries 9° (retrograde).Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius: Gemini 4° (retrograde).Neptune, the ruler of Pisces: Aries 2° (retrograde).

Moon phase

The Moon's shape as seen from Earth, from the new Moon through the first quarter and the full Moon to the last quarter and back, in about twenty-nine and a half days. The lit share grows (waxing) and then shrinks (waning).

New Moons are read as beginnings, full Moons as culminations and the quarters as turning points between them.

Today: Full, 100%.
